NDHFilms.com is getting a new look, starting today. By no means is it finished, but I’d like to get going with it.
The previous site was not fun to work with. It was my first serious attempt at building a site that was mobile-responsive. It didn’t look too bad, but any updates or changes meant moving giant blocks of HTML around, and that’s a pain.
I spend a lot of my time working on my other site, nantucketebooks.com, where I’m building powerful, browser-based e-books. The e-books are presented in HTML, so you can read them in any web browser, but I don’t write them in HTML. Instead, I wrote a markup language called Shanty, which is easy to write in, and a program translates that into HTML for me.
Shanty has paid for itself many times over in time saved. At Nantucket E-Books, I’m able to write my blog posts in Shanty, and now I’ve started using it for slideshow presentations. All I have to do is type in plain-text, and the computer takes care of the rest.
This week, I’ve started using Shanty on this site. The galleries you’ll find on other pages are generated from Shanty-formatted TXT files. The blog post you’re reading right now was written in Shanty. It’s not a full templating language by any stretch of the imagination, but for the first time in a while, it’s been fun to make updates to the site.
The new site is simpler, too. The old 18K stylesheet has been replaced by a 4K one.
Site visitors can look forward to an NDHFilms.com that is faster, more consistent, and easier to navigate.
