A NEW BLOG FOR THIS SITE, AND WRITER’S BLOCK

by NJB // // Broomfield, CO

I maintain two sites: this one, and Nantucket E-Books. An idea to improve one of the sites usually finds its way to the other.

My work on Version 2 of Nantucket E-Books led me to re-design the blog. I ended up building a small static-site generator. The Nantucket E-Books blog is now easier to follow, and requires no JavaScript.

Tonight, I decided to bring that blog script over to NDHFilms.com.

There was one big problem: I don’t have NodeJS installed on NDHFilms.com. I copied and downloaded what I needed to a new folder on my laptop and worked locally instead. If you’re reading this, then I managed to upload the folder using gFTP.

I have an important reason for doing this: I’m going through the worst writer’s block of my life. Yes, I can write on social media, and blog posts, and I do a lot of paperwork for my day job. I’m proud of my work programming and documenting Version 2 of Nantucket E-Books, and coding is definitely a rarefied kind of writing. I can do all that other writing, but when I sit down to write a story it’s almost painful.

I remember reading the Stephen King novel Bag of Bones, about an author whose writer’s block is so bad he gets physically sick when he opens up Microsoft Word. At the time I thought this was hyperbole, but I can summon a shred of empathy for his situation. To be even more blunt, I feel like the main character in my short story Sweet Relief, sweating and straining on that nightmarish commode for hours, weeks, months.

My old piano teacher, a jolly soul from New Orleans, once told me the only cure for writer’s block was to keep on writing. Well, I hope this helps me get back on track.
